Recommended Reading for GMs

This list focuses quite a bit on ancient and classical literature because I have found a great deal of inspiration from the classics, though I also include some more modern works that are also suitable.   The criteria for books being added to this list is if the book inspired ideas for my Campaigns, or helped provide considerations for the Back Story of my World.  Pick and choose as you see fit, and I'm sure that there will be something to appeal to almost every Gamesmaster somewhere in the list...

Very nice list. A little heavily weighted towards medieval Europe, I think. I also find it interesting that the only swashbuckling story you include is The Scarlet Pimpernel. I might expect to see none on the list, but not just one. Similarly, I find it interesting that you have one sci-fi novel, The Lensmen.

A few that I would add to the list:

The Three Musketeers, Dumas
Captain Blood, Sabatini
The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Gibbon
Guns Germs and Steel, Jared Diamond
Collapse, Jared Diamond
Medieval City, Gies

Thank you kindly for the suggestions. The sad truth is that I have not read nearly enough literature, and have tended to focus on medieval and classical literature, rather than modern because medieval and classical studies are my primary interest, academically. I do try to squeeze in more modern literature now and then as time permits. I will definitely add your suggestions to my "To Be Read ASAP" list! Thanks!

Also, you can find a similar, and more extended list, on the Literary Role Playing Game Society of Westchester Yahoo Group (LRPGSW). I will, when I get home, try to ensure that guests can read the databases, in which the list is located. I will also see if there is a way to make guests read-only, but members able to add to the list themselves, in case you want to offer your suggestions there as well. I should be able to get to that tonight. Thanks again for your suggestions! I look forward to reading them. :)

Well, unfortunately, as it turns out the Yahoo Group does not allow non-members the option to view the databases. Sad. But not to worry, if you are interested you can simply join the LRPGSW in which case you will have access to the databases section, and you can add entries that way as you see fit. And add to the discussion there if you like, of course. :)
